DESIGN-LED BARN STAYS

For our opening season, 'SLOE at Daniels offers two contemporary barns, each designed with restraint and care.

Each barn includes a king-size bed, underfloor heating, air-conditioning, kitchenette, rain shower and a private outdoor bath.

They are quiet by design: soundproofed roofs soften the rain, while large windows frame the shifting colours of the meadows and cattle pasture outside. Inside, the furniture is a mixture of old and new, drawn from family collections, antique shops and local craftsmen. Nothing competes with the view over the Severn and towards the Cotswolds, so the walls remain spare, the landscape kept as the artwork.

'SLOE at Daniels is no place of extravagance. Every choice, from the reclaimed beams to the orientation of the terraces, carries the same intention: to let the land speak.

A two-night minimum stay allows time for guests to settle into the rhythm here: preparing meals, watching the calves in summer, or walking through the fields at dusk. Wifi and television are present, though many guests find little need for them.

A LITTLE HISTORY

of daniels farm

Daniels Farm has been shaped by five generations of the same family since they first settled here, more than seventy years ago. It's spent much of that time in its current state as a dairy farm and the land remains lived in rather than curated. There's still the meadows that grow food to feed cattle in winter, orchards that return with each season, and buildings that reflect the hands that shaped them.

'SLOE is a continuation of that work rather than a departure. For the current generation, caring for this land means more than just working it. Opening part of the farm to guests is a way of sharing its heritage while helping to protect its future. By inviting others to experience the stillness and beauty of the Forest of Dean and Severn Vale, we hope to create a deeper connection with the countryside, one that encourages guests to care for nature and wildlife long after their stay.

of the name

The name 'SLOE draws from the historic word Bledisloe, recorded in the Domesday Book as the hill where the farm currently stands. Over centuries, Bledisloe became the name of the local tithing, and later of the ancient hundred. In 1917, Charles Bathurst adopted the name on becoming Lord Bledisloe, remembered for his role as Governor General of New Zealand and for his work in promoting community and conservation across the Commonwealth.

For many, the name 'SLOE conjures images of the wild sloe berry, a fruit that ripens slowly and with patience. It reminds us of where we come from and our responsibility to place and people. Together, these threads of heritage, stillness, and care became the foundation for 'SLOE at Daniels.
