FOREST OF DEAN & WYE VALLEY

The Forest of Dean and Wye Valley hold one of England’s richest landscapes, with ancient woodland, caves and hidden valleys forming what some call a forgotten triangle between two rivers.

From 'SLOE at Daniels, guests can follow country lanes and riverside paths for an hour to reach Newnham, a historical village perched on a cliff above the Severn, home to art galleries, cafés and independent restaurants. With a car, the forest opens further: miles of walking trails, canoeing on the Wye, cycling through woodland, wild swimming or quiet drives into villages where time feels slower.

This landscape is not only beautiful, but storied. Megalithic stone structures, older than Stonehenge, stand in fields and forest, wrapped in folklore. Local tales speak of stones that bleed when struck at midnight, and giants and dwarfs shaping the land. It is a place that inspired two of the great fantasy writers of the last century, proof of how myth and imagination root themselves here.

The nearest train stations are Lydney and Gloucester. From there, local buses stop at the end of the lane, five minutes on foot from the barns. Guests who arrive with provisions need no car: the meadows, riverside walks and farm paths are enough to fill a stay. For those wishing to explore further afield, the Cotswolds and Malvern Hills are both within easy reach for day trips.
